Yoga & Wellness Retreat

February 29th - March 7th, 2020

Ancient teachings, modern approach

This program is at capacity. We often have cancellations! To be placed on the waitlist, email Nicole at [email protected]

For many of us, our day-to-day reality is a demanding job + daily social obligations.  New technologies that were designed to simplify our lives somehow have added more to our already overflowing plates. Our culture tells us that being ‘busy’ is a good thing: it means we’re in demand + successful.  Whether we see this busy-ness as self-imposed or not, it’s hard to align ourselves with the person we want to be.

When was the last time you felt fully recharged?  When was the last time you had the space to dedicate to the things that you find important? This retreat is specifically designed to realign & re-calibrate.  To step away from our day-to-day dramas, and get a greater perspective on ourselves, our goals, our desires, & our friendships.

At this special Morocco retreat – expect afternoon excursions to the maze-like medina, and sunset meditation in our private riad. Expect rooftop Maghrebi mint tea, and some world-class yoga asana. Expect to create new bonds, share surprising conversations & laughter… and still find plenty of time for self-reflection.

Space for this retreat is limited to 18 students.

About Morocco

Morocco will take your breath away. It's the way Marrakech glows from your rooftop as the sun rises. It's the snakecharmers + storytellers weaving their way through the Jemaa el-Fna Square. It's walking in the literary footsteps of William S. Burroughs and Tennessee Williams. The thrill of haggling for handwoven rugs deep inside the medina. In Morocco, escape to a different world, where you'll sleep inside an opulent riad, camel-ride on the beach, and take in the scent of spices piled up on every corner. For this unique retreat, we'll experience the best of Morocco: we'll spend our first 4 nights in Marrakech, and our last 3 nights in the bohemian seaside town of Essaouira.

Marrakech, Morocco’s most famous city, is so cinematic it almost doesn’t seem real. There are the labyrinthine souks, full of trinkets and treasures; the vendors squeezing fresh pomegranate juice; and the call to prayer that echoes from the mosques at dusk. Yet, only two and a half hours west, Essaouira may as well be a world away from bustling Marrakech. With its barefoot, bohemian vibe, this low-key coastal town has long been a haven for surfers, artists, and musicians (it even attracted Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix back in the day). The seaside enclave is also a major cultural hub thanks to a melting pot of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and African influences. In the heart of town, you could spend a whole day exploring the cobblestoned medina—a UNESCO Site, where merchants hawk Berber-made boucherouite rugs, ceramic pottery, and babouche slippers.

The Retreat Center

For the first four nights in Marrakech, we've arranged a stunning private Riad in the heart of the medina (pictured above, with the gorgeous tilework). The Riad has 10 bedrooms, an interior courtyard with plunge pool, and the kind of rooftop you dream of on a winter's day. We will have the whole Riad to ourselves. We'll have breakfast on the rooftop each morning, and you'll also have a couple chances to venture into town and taste Moroccan cuisine on your own.

For the last three nights, we're staying in Essaouira, a low-key coastal town town 2.5 hours away. We have a few 90's Mercedes' arranged (the kind with the bouncy leather bench seats + a tape player) to zip our group off to the coast in style. This is your moment to wear that chic scarf and Jackie O sunglasses.

Les Chambres. (the rooms) Each room is unique, with it's own Moroccan charm. Some bedrooms have one large bed, some have two twin beds, and some have three beds. Some rooms have adjoining living rooms, while others have little terraces. Rates vary depending on if you decide to share a bed, to share a room but have your own bed, or opt for a triple. Please keep in mind we are not staying at resort - we are staying at a small private riad and a seaside bed + breakfast. If you are looking for a JW Marriott kind of experience, with central AC and turn-down service, this is simply not the retreat for you. If you appreciate understated beauty, rooftop adventures, the smell + tastes of a different culture, then this IS for you!

La Nourriture. (the food) For breakfast, expect eggs, local cheeses, homemade jams, fresh brewed mint tea, local fruits. For lunch and dinner, Moroccan dishes are influenced by Berber, Jewish, Arab, and French cultures. Expect lamb, chicken, and veggies slow-cooked in a clay pot. Meals are often served with Khobz, the crusty round flatbread cooked in a communal wood-fired oven. The menu items listed above are just to give you an idea! As it is part of Moroccan culture to eat meat, we have asked for meals according to local culture. If you're vegetarian or have any dietary restrictions, the property will happily accommodate you!

How To Arrive. Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport, and we'll arrange for a driver to take you to our private Riad.

Activities. For the first 4 nights in Marrakech, you'll have plenty of free time to explore the medina. At night, the main Jemaa el-Fna Square comes to life, with snakecharmers and the best street food you've ever had. One afternoon, we'll all go to the Hammam together (it's included in the retreat!) for a black soap scrub-down.

What's Not Included? Extras like massage (unless you ask Anton nicely!) wine, 2 lunches + 1 dinner, your international travel, your transfer from Essaouira to the airport at the end of our stay.

Daily Schedule

This retreat takes place from February 29th - March 7th, 2020. Plan on arriving at the Riad in Marrakech before 5pm on February 29th, and leaving Essaouira after yoga & breakfast on March 7th. (We'll arrange for your airport pickup from Marrakech airport, and you'll just need to pay for your transfer from Essouiera to wherever you're heading. We'll help you coordinate so it'll be smooth.). Each day is balanced between group activities, and plenty of free time to do as you wish. Everything is optional: you can get into as much or as little as you want. Below is a schedule just to give you a general idea (it tends to vary once we actually get going). Whether you want to embrace your introvert, or hang out with new friends - there will be plenty of opportunity for both.

Movement + Breath
Intelligent, rigorous vinyasa yoga, woven together with breath and mindfulness techniques.

10am - 11am

11am - 2pm

Wander through the medina, or just chill out by the plunge pool in our private riad.

A light lunch served on the terrace. Some days we'll go out for lunch as a group, and some days you'll have free to go out on your own.

3pm - 5pm

Spend the afternoon in the hammam, or take a nap on the rooftop.

5pm - 6:30pm

The afternoon activity varies. Often times it's a yoga class (more workshop style in format), and some other days we'll go on an adventure. It varies depending on the vibe of the group.

7pm - 9:30pm

Enjoy a Moroccan feast on our rooftop. You can grab a fabulous bottle of local wine for a reasonable price. Some nights we'll go out and experience

Sleep, or... put on your babouches (little leather slippers) and go to the night market to flirt with snakecharmers or have your fortune told.

  • I've been to Tuscany and Costa Rica with The Sacred Fig and cannot thank Anton enough for spiking my interest in yoga retreats. First of all, his teaching style is genius; technical and fun. The co-leaders he selects bring valuable contributions to the retreat. It's been a year since Tuscany, but I'm still using Amber's Nidra (physic sleep) download if I can't get my eight hours of sleep in NY. Grace helped me not only learn yoga but both her and Anton were the perfect mentors when we went horse-riding in the beautiful & wild Costa Rican jungle. There is never a dull moment on these retreats, I only wish they were longer! Personally, I have enjoyed every moment. I've learned how to make Tiramisu in Italy, and Tamales in Costa Rica. Yoga away from routine life provided me with a new perspective, it has opened my heart and calmed me down... it's just what these retreats do. I cannot wait to experience another new country (and new poses!) with The Sacred Fig - the best!

  • I took off the day after Christmas to head to Costa Rica for my first Sacred Fig retreat... AMAZING doesn't begin to describe it! Being on a Sacred Fig retreat was simply the best medicine for my soul. The location was magical. Even being a beginner yogi, I immediately felt very comfortable, and Anton was the best teacher I could have asked for. I highly recommend joining a Sacred Fig retreat!!
